PICTURED: Young man risks safety to aid young woman on high beam at train station

A young man has been pictured coming to the aid of an apparently suicidal young woman, while witnesses tried repeatedly to get police to help as well.

Witness Michal Klein posted a photo of the incident at New York’s Broadway-Lafeyette subway station to Facebook over the weekend.

Ms Klein told CBS New York another witness had told her the young woman had made suicidal comments before climbing out into the dangerous position.

“A random young guy went after her to calm her down. Others called for help and apparently no one cared,” Ms Klein wrote on Facebook afterwards.

“'People were on phones making second attempts and finally cops showed up, but just cleared area and stood there.

“I hope she gets the help she needs. And bravo to the young man for risking his own safety to help.”

Ms Klein’s photo shows the young man with his arm around the young woman as both sit on a girder about six metres above the hard subway floor.
