WATCH: 'Road rage' causes dramatic chain reaction collision on LA highway

Dramatic footage shows how a suspected road rage incident triggered a chain reaction on a LA highway that caused a vehicle to flip on its roof and a motorist to be hospitalised.

The footage shows how an exchange between a motorcyclist and a car, travelling paralell along a Southern California freeway last Wednesday, caused another vehicle to spin out of control and flip on its roof.

A passenger travelling in a vehicle following close behind told NBC 7 San Diego he started recording when the gray sedan cut off the biker and the pair exchanged words "back and forth".

At the start of the clip, the motorcyclist can be seen kicking the driver's side of the sedan as the pair appear to be travelling in the same lane.

Gasps can be heard as the sedan cuts off the biker to the left, forcing it over to the next lane.

The sedan driver then swerved back to hit the motorcyclist. But this only caused the vehicle to hit the barrier and spin out of control and spill over to the next two lanes, cleaning up a white ute in its path.

The ute spun before it was flipped and thrown on its roof, in the middle of the highway.

The driver of the ute was hospitalised and remains in a stable condition, the California Highway Patrol said.

Police are searching for the motorcyclist and said the crash was being investigated as a road rage incident and a possible hit-and run.

"Obviously it was a road rage incident. He was kicking the vehicle. We have to get a statement, see what's going on," said CHP officer Josh Greengard.
