Towel shortage leaves nude festival goers out in the cold

More than 1000 naked people hit a Tasmanian beach for the annual Dark Mofo festival nude swim but most of them reportedly didn’t bring towels.

The ABC reports, 1020 keen swimmers in their birthday suits braved temperatures as low as 4C in Hobart's River Derwent as part of Wednesday’s winter solstice.

But with a number of skinny dippers showing up without registering, organisers of the event reportedly underestimated how many towels they would need.

About 750 people were expected to show up.

Kirsha Kaechele, wife of Dark Mofo boss David Walsh, was one of those who went without a towel and had to borrow one from a friend.

"I just managed. Luckily I had a friend and he let me use his towel after he'd finished with it," she said.

Dark Mofo executive director Kate Gould said next year organisers would “double” the amount of towels for next year’s swim.
