Teen living with 'childhood Alzheimer’s' since she was eight hopes to find cure

A Perth teenager living with ‘childhood Alzheimer’s’ is hoping a new experimental drug will cure her symptoms.

Jessica Sheehan, 18, is the only known person in WA to have Niemann-Pick type C.

She was just eight years old when she was diagnosed with the condition, which is caused by a build up of cholesterol in the brain.

Jessica’s mum, Trina Sheehan, said her daughter’s condition is ultimately fatal.

“Once you’re diagnosed usually 10 years is your lifespan,” she said.

But Jessica is one of 51 candidates worldwide to take part in a trial for experimental drug VTS-270, which, if successful researchers believe it could relieve her of her symptoms.

The trial involves fortnightly trips to Melbourne for Jessica to receive injections into her spine.

Jessica said it’s been a difficult time.

“It’s been a rollercoaster,” she said.

“Just from doctor to doctor.”

If the trial proves successful the drug will be released around Australia within a year.
