Turnbull was the second world leader to congratulate Trump thanks to golfer Greg Norman

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was the second world leader to congratulate US President-elect Donald Trump after golfing legend Greg Norman passed on his private mobile number.

Within hours of Mr Trump's win, Australia’s US ambassador Joe Hockey had contacted Mr Norman 'The Shark' asking him for Trump's number.

The Aussie golfing star has been friends with Trump for a decade and helped facilitate the call.

Turnbull phoned the property tycoon from Parliament House and congratulated him on his win.

He described the 15-minute phone call as a "very warm conversation".

This type of call would normally be facilitated by the Department of Foreign Affairs or through advisers at the White House.

But it was Australia’s golfing legend Greg Norman that helped the PM.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was the first leader to call Trump and congratulate him.

Trump is not the only top US politician that Mr Norman is friendly with.

The golfing star has a good relationship with the Clintons too.
