Married couple fall unconscious, writhe on sidewalk after 'heroin overdose'

A married couple fell unconscious and their bodies writhed on a sidewalk as onlookers watched on and laughed in a shocking video showcasing America's heroin epidemic.

Bystander Courtland Garner filmed a husband and wife's "overdose" aftermath in broad daylight in Memphis, Tennessee, and live streamed the video on Facebook on Monday, which has gone viral.

The couple told Memphis Police they had "snorted some heroin" in a nearby Walgreens bathroom, WREG reported.

A bystander called 911 after seeing the couple flopped over on the sidewalk at around 3:30 pm.

In the video, Carla Hiers, 59, and her husband writhed on the floor as crowds stand by and laugh.

Hiers, who is also known as Carla High, had collapsed on her knees unable to move as her husband lay flopped on his back on a nearby bench.

"This fella might be dead...I hope he's not dead," a bystander yelled.

"He's got a pulse," another replied.

Others watched on and laughed and one person said: "That's some good s*** they been smoking."

Paramedics arrived and revived Hiers and her partner, who are both known to be long-time drug addicts.

Hiers was taken into custody due to an outstanding warrant for her arrest and was booked into Shelby County Jail on a $200 bond.

She has been jailed multiple times on charges including theft, drug possession and fraud, the TV station reported.

The concerning video is another example of America's heroin epidemic that is out of control.

Last month, a toddler was filmed crying and shaking her unconscious mother after the woman reportedly collapsed from a suspected drug overdose.

The two-year-old girl sobbed as she grabbed her mother's hair and frantically tried to wake her after the 36-year-old collapsed in a New Hampshire supermarket on September 18.

Two weeks before this incident, Ohio Police released photos of a couple passed out with their mouths agape and a four-year-old left alone in the back seat.

It was later revealed the woman was identified as the boy's grandmother and the couple had overdosed on heroin.

The images were released to raise awareness of the epidemic and police were unapologetic in their decision to distribute the photo.
