Woman in custody after Monash freeway closure stops traffic for 11km

Police have taken a woman into custody after she reportedly made threats to harm herself on a bridge, forcing the closure of Melbourne's Monash Freeway in both directions.

Traffic stretching for 11 kilometres stopped to a gridlock after police closed the major road between Warrigal and Burke roads at around 6:50am.

Officers have been talking to the woman, who was believed to be using a mirror to see if anyone is walking up behind her.

Emergency services are standing by at Glen Iris train station.

Diversions are in place on Princes Highway. There is no word as to when the roads will be reopened at this stage.

Transport authorities advise drivers to exit the freeway at Toorak Rd and re-enter at Warrigal Rd.
