Tamvakis is accused of killing his mother, Violet Tamvakis in her Bentleigh home, in Melbourne’s south-east.

The 75-year-old died sometime between the Anzac Day public holiday and Tuesday.

The alarm was raised when she failed to pick up her grandchildren from school on Tuesday afternoon.

Police believe she had been the victim of a violent assault, after her body was found with wounds.

Her son, Tamvakis, 44, was charged with one count of murder on Friday.

In court on Saturday Tamvakis’ defence counsel said the accused had been diagnosed with depression and required anti-depressant medication while in custody.

The Age reported Tamvakis ‘bowed politely’ to the magistrate before he was escorted out of the courtroom.

He will appear in court again on Monday.
