Notorious Victoria robber charged

One of Victoria's most notorious figures has been charged with violent armed robberies dating back more than a quarter of a century.

Known as 'Badness', Christopher Dean Binse is accused of being involved in eight unsolved crimes across Melbourne, which netted nearly half a million dollars.

The 47-year-old has been charged with crimes dating back to 1988 following new information on the unsolved heists.

Two of the robberies were staged at the Highpoint shopping centre in 1991, just a month apart. On November 8, two Brambles officers were ambushed inside a Target store and robbed at gunpoint in front of about 80 shoppers. Then, on December 10, the Commonwealth Bank branch was stormed by two masked men, one alleged to be Mr Binse, robbing tellers.

Police allege he was responsible for armed robberies in Altona and Keilor Rast in consecutive days in May 1988, another in Moonee Ponds three weeks later and another in St Albans two weeks after that.

He is also believed to be responsible for a hold-up in Noble Park in August 1989 and another two years later in Altona.

Mr Binse will face court on October 21.
