Since fleeing political oppression in Ethiopia to start a new life in WA, Fikirte Hailmariam has not looked back.

And the mother of three thinks more people should have opportunities like hers.

“I came to Perth in 1998 with my children, and my husband was in a detention centre for three years,” she said.

“It was not easy but ... it is a blessing for us to be here.”

Ms Hailmariam joined hundreds of other refugees and supporters in Fremantle yesterday to mark the start of Refugee Week.

The Welcome Fiesta was a celebration of people who have gained asylum in Australia and a reflection on the plight of unsuccessful attempts.

“Many people are dying because they want to go somewhere to have a better life,” Ms Hailmariam said.

Participants in the fiesta walked through the streets and played music in support of refugees.

Fremantle deputy mayor Josh Wilson said Fremantle was a place of inclusion.
