Peel stun sluggish Subiaco

Peel has won its third game under caretaker coach Mark Moody, kicking clear late in the game to outclass Subiaco by 52 points at Bendigo Bank Stadium.

The Thunder withstood a third-quarter Lions’ revival to take the match 20.15 (135) to 12.11 (83).

Moody took over from Trevor Williams after round 13, the South Australian given control of the Mandurah-based club’s last nine games of the season.

The Thunder, coming off a bye, bore little resemblance to the side which had lost its previous three games against West Perth, Swan Districts and Claremont by an average of 93 points.

Fremantle midfielder Jesse Crichton was outstanding for Peel early, collecting nine possessions and finishing his good work with a goal in the first term.

The Thunder consolidated when Rhett Mason and Ash Thornton kicked the first two goals of the second stanza.

Subiaco’s first goal of the match came from the boot of Alliston Pickett at the 11-minute mark of the second quarter.

It was the consistent good work of Crichton, Eddie Dann, Jamason Daniels, Pat Travers, Rhett Mason, Scott Lycett, Kamdyn McIntsoh, Kristin Thornton, Ash Thornton, Matt Orzel and Toby Gianatti that helped the home side to a 50-point lead at half time.

The game developed into an arm wrestle in the third quarter, Subiaco closing to 34 points at the last change after outscoring the Thunder by six goals to three.

Peel held their nerve, rattling on six goals to three in the final term for a convincing victory.

The Lions gained some consolation by winning both minor grades, taking out the reserves 19.10 (124) to 7.9 (51) and the colts 18.12 (120) to 8.5 (53).

Brant Chambers was a star with eight goals in the reserves for the Lions while league regular Matt Battye booted three for the Thunder.
