When Brisbane read out Nick Robertson's name at pick No.34 in yesterday's national draft, the usually poised midfielder couldn't control himself.

"The whole family came over and it was just a big roar, it knocked me off my chair," he said. "I fell on the floor crying, mate."

Robertson, 18, went into last season with high hopes but had shoulder surgery after just three games of colts.

Despite playing hardly any football for the year, his talent was enough for the Lions to take him with their final pick in the second round.

The 18-year-old was the second West Perth product picked up in yesterday's draft after tall utility player Blake Acres went to St Kilda at pick No.19.

Robertson said that after a year on the sidelines he had started to doubt if he would be picked up at all.

"That was obviously a huge worry of mine with the shoulder and not playing any footy," he said.

"To see the name on the screen is just huge for me.

"I've always said any opportunity is an opportunity and I can't wait to start my footy career at the Brisbane Lions. I'm lost for words, I'm that excited."

Acres, 18, also suffered a shoulder injury while playing for the Falcons last season but delayed surgery to play in the under-18 championships.

Acres was one of the most versatile players in this year's draft pool and St Kilda were quick to swoop on the 190cm and 88kg Falcon when he was still available near the end of the first round.

"Once you get your name called out all those nerves just went and it was just excitement," Acres said.

"I think they (St Kilda) are in a rebuilding stage right now so it will be good to be a part of that.

"Hopefully I can get a game in the next year or two."

Both should be able to take part in the full pre-season at their new clubs.
