Sea Shepherd targets SW whale zone

Cetacean conservation group Sea Shepherd has weighed into the debate about marine sanctuaries in the South West and across Australia, “taking to the cyber waves” in a campaign targeting Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke.

Sea Shepherd director Jeff Hansen said Australia had “an historic opportunity” to take the lead on whale preservation, with the sanctuaries including habitat for the endangered blue whale.

“Sea Shepherd supporters want direct action, and direct results.

"But without marine sanctuaries there are no marine life safe havens for anyone to protect and patrol,” he said in a media release.

“The Environment Minister has failed to act on the overwhelming science evidence and propose large sanctuaries in special places such as the Perth Canyon and Geographe Bay.”
