Cash will get city buzzing

Pollinators, swarms and hives take on other meanings with the emergence of a new not-for-profit group in Geraldton which aims to turn “great ideas” into social innovation and entrepreneurial projects.

City of Greater Geraldton Commissioners have agreed to provide $42,000 in sponsorship towards an innovative leaders’ program and two “swarm” events run by Pollinators Incorporated.

The leaders’ program would be for 40 graduates to turn their ideas from the City’s 2029 and Beyond consultations into action.

The swarm events would bring together up to 80 people per event, and include showcasing of innovative projects and sessions for participants to build support and get feedback on the projects.

Another aspect of the proposal is a social networking project called CityHive, to be launched at the WA Museum Geraldton tonight.

The founder of Pollinators, established in Geraldton last year, is former City environmental sustainability officer Andrew Outhwaite.

He told the Commissioners CityHive envisaged the creation of a physical workspace which would allow community members to collaborate “and be inspired” to develop creative business and industry projects within the city.

As well as the dedication of the Fifth Element during the commemoration, the City Commissioners also agreed that two plaques for the No. 9 Squadron Association would also be dedicated, with their placement deferred to a later date.

The Commissioners agreed to endorse a self-funding loan of $250,000 for the Geraldton Hockey Association to meet a shortfall in construction of its clubrooms in partnership with the City and the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Enhancement of the Eastern Breakwater has moved a step closer, with the Commissioners adopting a draft concept design and agreeing to call for tenders for the design and construction of the project.

The Geraldton Airport Master Plan was adopted and the City will now advertise it for public comment over the next two months.

Also to be advertised for public comment is a Regional Art Gallery master plan, and a community workshop is to be held to discuss the plan.
