Pop star Justin Bieber has ruined Christmas Day for many fans by officially announcing his retirement.

The hit maker tweeted to his millions of followers today: “My beloved beliebers I’m officially retiring.”

Minutes later he tweeted: “The media talks a lot about me. They make a (sic) up a lot of lies and want me to fail but I’m never leaving you, being a belieber is a lifestyle.”

He then wished fans all the best: “Be kind loving to each other, forgive each other as god forgave us through Christ Merry Christmas IM HERE FOREVER.”

During an interview on US radio station Power 106 last week the pop sensation said he was calling it quits.

But his manager, Scooter Braun, played down talk of retirement, insisting Bieber was simply planning some downtime.

Speaking on US news show Access Hollywood Live, Braun said: “He’s gonna take time for himself, because he hasn’t taken time off since he was 12 and he’ll be 20 years old in March.”

Bieber has been the subject of scathing tabloid reports for several months amid allegations of reckless driving and other bad boy behaviour.

The announcement comes the same day as the release of his latest movie Believe.

He has said he hoped his new movie would show the public what he was really like behind the controversial headlines.

Bieber played at Perth Arena earlier this month, the last show of his almost 160-date Believe world tour.
