Three detainees escape from Northam
Authorities searching for one of three people who escaped from the Serco-managed Northam detention centre yesterday.
Three Vietnamese nationals scaled fences at the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre just before 2pm yesterday, according to police.
One man, who is understood to have injured himself while climbing over the fence, was caught by authorities a short time later.
Another man was caught about 10am today in Wundowie.
The hunt for the third man is continuing.
The escape, which follows others from the centre, will increase pressure on Serco already under scrutiny following the escape of two regional prisoners.
A Vietnamese teenager who escaped from the facilities more than two weeks ago has still not been found.
Two Vietnamese asylum seekers escaped from the centre in August last year.
A spokeswoman for the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison confirmed three Vietnamese detainees escaped from the Serco-run facility yesterday.
She said WA Police and AFP had been informed and two individuals had been located.
Efforts to locate the other escapee were continuing.
“The detention services provider will conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the escape,” the spokeswoman said.
“The Minister is awaiting a report from the service provider on previous escapes and is following this matter up with his Department on his return from annual leave.”
