Bird deaths investigation

Wildlife and agricultural authorities are investigating the deaths of hundreds of migratory birds that have washed up along the State's south coast in recent weeks.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife confirmed it was looking into the situation after a string of reports of dead birds - mostly shearwaters - between Bremer Bay, east of Albany, and Cape Arid, east of Esperance.

Although the initial cause of death for the birds was listed as storm-related, the DPAW said it had collected samples and sent them to the Agriculture and Food Department's veterinarian.

The move comes after dead shearwaters, a common Australian bird which often migrates vast distances, were also noticed along eastern Australia's southern coastline.

"Preliminary results are expected in the near future though any further analysis for disease may take up to three weeks," the DPAW said.
