Firefighters control blaze near Esperance

Esperance firefighters scrambled to control a bushfire near the western outskirts of the town yesterday which burnt out scrub over a 6ha area.

The fire started just after noon near Valley Road, with units from the Pink Lake, Quarry Road and Six Mile Hill brigades, Esperance Fire and Rescue, Department of Environment and Conservation and Fire and Emergency Services Authority attending.

Police and SES volunteers were also at the scene, preventing members of the public getting too close to the blaze.

A D6 bulldozer was also called in to clear scrub lines, enabling firefighters better access to extinguish the blaze.

FESA district manager Gavin Wornes said it was burning in an area that was burnt about seven years ago.

“The vegetation wasn’t that old, but the biggest concerns were the properties to the north,” he said.
