Boxing promoters insist world title fight goes on
The promoters of Friday night's world title boxing card in Perth say their headline fight will go ahead despite a late double headache.
Dragon Fire Promotions have been forced to search for a late sponsor after the Indonesian backer of star turn Chris John pulled out on the weekend.
The company released a statement saying Golden Eagle Coffee had withdrawn from John's WBA featherweight Super title defence against Simpiwe Vetyeka at Metro City because of the ongoing tensions over the Australian Government's alleged spying of the Indonesian president.
Golden Eagle were reportedly sponsoring the fight for $250,000.
A spokesman for Dragon Fire said the show was not at risk but acknowledged it could be too late to find a new sponsor.
Then another spanner was thrown in the works with Sydney's former IBF world champion Lovemore Ndou threatening to seek an injunction preventing Vetyeka from facing John.
South Africa-born Ndou, 42, now a qualified solicitor, said he was the manager of Vetyeka and that the fight had been made without his consent.
South African Nick Durandt says he has been Ndou's manager for his last three fights.
The Dragon Fire spokesman said the matter was in the hands of lawyers but that he was confident it would be resolved.
