An Indonesian tall ship is limping into Geraldton after breaking a mast at Steep Point near Shark Bay earlier today.

The Indonesian tall ship Kri Dewaruci, which is in Australian waters as part of its preparation for an international tall ships race in October, is being escorted to Geraldton by an Australian Maritime Safety Authority Dornier aircraft.

The captain had told AMSA the vessel needed no immediate assistance.

The ship could be under sail or using both its remaining sails in association with its engine.

A maritime safety spokesperson says 155 people are on board the 58m vessel but could not confirm reports that it was sailing between Perth and Darwin when the mast broke.

About 11am today, the vessel was 140 nautical miles from Geraldton.

Earlier this month, the City tried to get a Dutch tall ship to call in to Geraldton when it was visiting the Abrolhos, but it weather prevented the visit.
