Rundle Mall wants to review public holiday shopping hours

The management of Adelaide shopping strip Rundle Mall wants to review public holiday shopping hours after customers were left waiting until stores opened at 11am today.

Shoppers who spoke to 7News this morning said the stores should have opened their doors earlier.

Mall management wants to revisit current laws to match demand, and said it is worth exploring opening earlier in warmer months.

“We’ve got to just watch what’s going on and match the hours to the time people want to be here,” Rundle Mall Management Authority chief executive Ian Darbyshire said.

But it does not want the same courtesy extended to suburban shopping centres.

Any changes though are destined to hit a major roadblock with the state’s most powerful union.

“We don’t think there is any need for further deregulation,” Peter Malinouskas from the shop assistants’ union said.

“Here is time for workers to have time off before 11 o’clock on the day.”

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said the government did not plan to make any further changes to opening hours.

But the state Opposition said the government should be listening more to traders.
