Man beheads girlfriend in thwarted suicide pact

A man has reportedly taken a knife to his girlfriend's throat and sliced her head off outside a school hall where she was attending exams.

Vijendra Kumar, 20, allegedly murdered his 17-year-old lover Khushboo Kumari, at St Xavier's College in Ranchi, north east India amongst shocked and horrified students.

According to reports, Kumar attacked Kumari with a ceremonial curved weapon called a khukri. After Kumar used the sharp dagger-like weapon to decapitate his girlfriend, he was mobbed by onlookers who handed him to police.

In local reports police have revealed the attack was part of a botched suicide pact Kumar had supposedly arranged with the girl.

'Since our parents were not in favour of our marriage, we had decided to die,' Kumar is said to have told police.

'As per our decision, after killing her I was to kill myself. But I was overpowered by others.' said Kumar.

Police spokesman Praveen Singh said: 'We still don't know if she was in love with him. An inquiry is ongoing. Soon we will come to know the truth.'

Kumari was reportedly studying a course at Ranchi Women's College. Kumar was studying engineering in Jamshedpur.
