Teen hailed hero for saving girl on rail tracks

A Melbourne schoolboy who risked his own life to save a young girl from being hit by a train has spoken of his extreme bravery.

Daniel Grulke saw the girl walking on the tracks at Beaconsfield Station as he stood on the platform waiting for a train at about 4.30pm yesterday.

As the train approached, Daniel said it was clear the girl was in real danger.

"As it got to about 20 metres away, I decided she wasn't going to move, she's not going to get out of the way," he said.

"I just jumped down onto the tracks and pushed her off so she was safe."

The year 12 student, who attends St Francis Xavier College in Beaconsfield, was also forced to leap out of the way as the train rushed passed.

Witnesses watched in horror as the drama unfolded.

Onlooker Billy Davidson said: "There were a few people screaming her name...it was just crazy."

Daniel's courage has earned him a huge amount of respect from fellow pupils and teachers.

Principal Paul Desmond is even considering nominating Daniel for a bravery award.

"A couple of people asked if I'd co-sign the nomination form and I'd be only proud to do so," he said.

There are around 150 rail suicides in Australia every year, and a national campaign is being launched to reduce that number.

Daniel is urging others to ask for help.

"Suicide is definitely not the answer," he said. "I was lucky I was there to help her out."

The teenage girl is now recovering in hospital.
