Adrian Bayley in court over Jill Meagher murder case

The family and friends of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher have read emotional victim impact statements at the plea hearing for the man who has admitted guilt over her rape and murder.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, of Coburg, pleaded guilty in April to raping and murdering the 29-year-old in Brunswick on September 22 last year.

Her body was later found at Gisborne South, north of Melbourne.

Ms Meagher's family, including her husband Tom Meagher and her father George McKeon, are at the Victorian Supreme Court for Bayley's plea hearing.

The court has heard victim impact statements from Ms Meagher's family, friends and work colleagues.

Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert SC has told the court what happened on the night Ms Meagher was murdered.

Bayley's lawyer Saul Holt SC will give submissions on behalf of his client.

The hearing continues before Justice Geoffrey Nettle.
