Elderly driver ploughs into shop front
Shoppers have had a lucky escape after an elderly driver ploughed through the front window of a supermarket in Fitzroy North.
The vehicle crashed through the shop front window of the Piedimonte's IGA supermarket in Best Street, shortly after 11.30am.
CCTV footage shows shelves sent flying and shoppers scattering as the vehicle careers into the shop before coming to rest in front of a checkout.
Frantic customers and staff rush to pull the shaken driver to safety as smoke begins to billow from the small hatchback.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade's Chris Drysdale said the store was busy with customers when the crash happened.
Miraculously, no one was injured.
"The shopping strip was fairly occupied," firefighter Drysdale said. "No doubt there would have been a few surprised faces."
It is understood the elderly woman may have mistaken the accelerator for the brakes.
Staff members reported hearing a loud bang and thought a bomb may have gone off.
One worker told reporters: "I was out the back when I heard a big bang - boom. I ran up the front and I saw the car right in the middle there - it's unbelievable.
"We thought someone may have put a bomb out the front of the shop."
Relatives arrived quickly at the scene to comfort the woman, who remarkably escaped injury but was given a precautionary check up.
Staff at the store began the clean up almost immediately and remained open throughout the day.
