Reddit user complains Coles chicken "appears to have gangrene"

A Reddit user has posted a picture on the networking service of chicken, they claim is from Coles, appearing to have some kind of discolored mustard growth.

Oscilllator submitted two photos last night with the caption: "PSA: This Chicken I bought yesterday from coles appears to have gangrene."

One is of the chicken breast on a chopping board, the other is next to a Coles packet labelled RSPCA Approved Chicken, breast fillet large pack. It displays a best before date of April 19.

The user has received dozens of responses since the post, some saying they are now more turned off eating meat.

"The older I get and the more I find out about the meat industry, the more I feel as though ethical veganism is the way to live," responded the user Pict.

Another asking Oscilllator if they would notify the store.

Oscilllator responded: "I don't have the receipt, but I think if I show them the picture they won't have a problem believing me. And although I didn't show it in the picture, the chicken breast was also falling apart - it was clearly not a healthy chicken."

But not everyone is convinced that the discolouration is something to be too concerned about.

"Looks like it might have been a cyst, ya get that sometimes" PatriarchPistachio wrote.

"I came across this once too. I just cut the green bit off. Got a bit paranoid afterwards and googled it and all it is, is just dead muscle tissue. I ate the chicken and am alive to tell this story today. And I still buy chicken from Coles every fortnight," jamesargh wrote.

"I've seen this once as well (not from Coles though). When I did my extensive internet research, the explanation seems to be that this is the result of a section of the muscle dying due to lack of blood supply. Not gangrene, that's just how the dead tissue looks in chicken." posted the user Hazwrach.

Another claimed the condition causing the discolouration is actually called deep pectoral myopathy.

User, wunty said,"It occurs when chickens that have been selected to have unnaturally large breast muscles flap their wings. The breast cuts off the blood supply to the tenderloin and it dies inside the live bird. The poultry industries solution for DPM is to prevent the birds from flapping their wings."

A Coles spokesperson provided the following statement to Yahoo7 this afternoon.

"The quality of our products is very important to us. This looks like deep pectoral myopathy (DPM) which is a green discoloration of the flesh caused when swelling occurs as a result of oxygen deficiency in the muscle. This usually happens from the bird flapping its wings too much. It is not harmful to eat and the taste of the chicken would not be altered."

"We encourage customers to return any item that they’re not 100% happy with, to their nearest store for a full refund or replacement."

Either way it has turned some people off their chicken dinners, for a little while at least.
