Video has emerged of a New York Police officer assaulting an 11-year-old girl after he wrongly accused her of stealing another boy's phone.

In the CCTV footage from outside a store in the Bronx the police officer is seen walking into a store and pulling the girl out onto the side walk by her jumper.

After what seems an attempt to tell the officer what has happened, the officer pulls her towards him before placing his hands on her neck and bringing her down to the ground.

The police officer stated that during the struggle they both slipped and fell to the ground.

While on the ground, the 11-year-old can be seen continuing to flail her arms and thrash her body.

This allegedly prevented the officer from placing handcuffs on her so the struggle continued until he was able to get them on.

The schoolgirl was eventually arrested before charges were later dropped after it emerged the girl hadn't stolen the phone.

As it turns out, a boy had accidentally dropped his phone before it was picked up by another child.

Claims of assault and battery and excessive force are being brought against the police officer involved with the girl's parents alleging she now cries herself to sleep.
