Mr Cundy said the victims included one person who had died in hospital.

"There is nothing to suggest at this time that the fire was started deliberately," he added.

The death toll is expected to rise further as the process of recovering bodies from the burned-out apartment block continues.

The BBC has reported that 76 people are still missing.

At lunchtime on Friday Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said their investigation into the fire woul "establish the facts and provide answers" to the cause of the fire.
