It is believed a worker briefly spotted what looked to be a limb at a Hampton Park tip in Melbourne's south-east about 9.50 Monday morning.

The worker was unable to prevent the possible human remains from being covered by incoming rubbish, and it became buried.

Investigators are currently at the scene excavating the area in an attempt to locate and confirm the report of the limb.

The find comes a week after a fisherman found a human skull on Geelong's North Shore beach, on June 14.
