A Canadian plumber has discovered a gold bar worth more than $50,000 while renovating a bathroom in Calgary.

Alif Babul and his apprentice had just ripped out a bathtub when they discovered the treasure just sitting there, CBCnews reported.

But it could easily have ended up in the dump with neither men recognising it for what it was: a 1kg stamped brick of gold.

“Who stores gold bars underneath their tub, right? Kinda crazy,” he told the station.

While the plumber of 12 years could have been persuaded by thoughts of all that wealth, his conscience won over.

"My wife and I had a long chat about that. I said to my wife, 'I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but it's the right thing to do,'" he told CBCnews.

Now he is hoping he’ll be rewarded for his honesty with some karma - “good karma,” he laughed.

Mr Babul said the owners were delighted by the discovery, having lost track of the precious brick.
