Children given tough choice between gifts for themselves or parents

Children from an impoverished area in the US have been presented with a very tough choice as Christmas approaches.

They were each questioned about Christmas gifts by UP TV, a network that aims to produce inspiring content.

The kids were asked about the one thing they really wanted for Christmas, and what they believed other family members would most like to receive.

A little girl wanted a computer, another ‘a big, giant Barbie house,’ while one boy said he really wanted a truck and another wanted an X-Box 360.

Their parents, they thought, would like ‘jewellery’, ‘a new TV’, and ‘watches’.

“She loves jewellery,” said one little girl about her mum.

A little boy said his mum would love a ring; “she’s never really had a ring,” he said.

Then they were each given the gift they really wanted – and their responses said a thousand words: eyes wide and grins huge.

“What in the world…You really got this for me?”

Then they were given the gift they thought their parents would most like to receive for Christmas, and their eyes gaped even wider and their jaws dropped further to the table.

But just as the excitement settled in, they were delivered the words they did not want to hear: “The catch is…”

The catch was that they had to pick one: either a present for themselves or one for their parents.

“Is that a really hard question?’ one girl was asked, and she replied with a very exasperated “um, hmmm”.

But one by one they chose: “I gotta go with the ring”, “I’ll chose this for my mom,” – each of them turning their gaze away from their own happiness, to chose their parents’.

The joys of Christmas!
