Club rides to the rescue for juniors

Hedland Reds junior footy players should find it easier to kick on towards their goals after Hedland Riders Association donated funds to purchase new match-day kit.

The HRA donation has enabled the junior club to buy 12 new footballs, eight goalpost pads, drink bottles and a new barbecue so the boys and girls can enjoy a snag after games.

Reds co-ordinator Shane Beros said the club did not own any equipment when it started.

"Two years ago we had nothing, we were borrowing all the school's equipment before last year (when)we started buying our own stuff," he said.

"This is another example of how the community is helping us out.

"We had cheap footballs and now we have proper Burleys thanks to these guys from the riders' association."

The HRA's assistance comes as junior numbers have swelled in the two years the Reds have been operating.

"Three years ago there was none of this football in town and now we've got over 140 kids registered, so it gives the kids something to do and the boys are really keen on their training," Beros said.

HRA member Chris Gillingham said they were always listening for a community group or person they could lend a hand to.

"Whenever we can we try to help out and, due to the fact that one of our members' young fellas plays football, we heard they were in a time of need," he said.

Fresh from holding their bike and car show this month, the HRA are already looking ahead to their next major fundraiser, the Poker Run at the end of August.
