Get ready to stomp the Harvey Festival

GRAPE stompers around the South West and beyond will again be out in force at this year's Harvey Harvest Festival to compete in the annual WA Grape Stomping Championships.

Each year the competition draws a huge crowd, watching eagerly to see which pair will collect the most grape juice and pulp to win one of the categories.

Grape stomp coordinator Leanne Pronk said the three categories for people to compete in includes primary school-aged children, high school-aged students and the open category for people 17 years and older.

"People can register on the day from 9.30am and can find our stall and stage in the piazza," Mrs Pronk said.

"The heats begin at 11.30am and the top three teams from each division will stomp it out in the grand finals on the main stage at Snells Park.

"The junior teams are given three minutes to makes as much juice as possible and the open division teams are given two minutes."

Mrs Pronk said there were some fantastic prizes up for grabs again this year.

"First, second and third-placed teams from each of the junior divisions will receive Coles-Myer vouchers and in the open division we have cash prizes of $500 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third," she said.

"The open winners will also have their names engraved on the perpetual WA Grape Stomping Championships trophy."

Mrs Pronk said the competition was a popular attraction of the festival for people of every age.

"It is run on a volunteer basis and each year students from the high schools assist me with the setting up, packing away and the overall running of the event," she said.
