High risk inmates at NSW’s Goulburn jail are set to be banned from speaking languages other than English.

Super-maximum security prisoners classified as 'Extreme High Risk Restricted', including those charged with terror offences, will not be allowed to speak foreign languages to visitors and callers, and must write all letters in English.

The new rules, which come into effect on March 13, are part of the prison’s response to the increased terror threat across state.
The changes ordered by NSW Attorney-General Brad Hazzard also include new powers for prison guards.

Guards will now be required to record conversations between prisoners and visitors and eject anyone caught communicating in languages other than English.
