Elderly man dies in house fire in Tasmania's north

Tasmania Police and fire investigators are trying to determine if an elderly man died before a fire broke out in his house or if he was trying to escape.

Fire crews arrived at home in Talisker street, Perth, in the state's north, to find the kitchen and laundry ablaze just before 1:00am (ADST).

Senior Constable Sam Lloyd said the 87-year-old man was found in the hallway in the main living area.

"He was located obviously face down inside the property but where he was coming from or where he was going to is currently unknown," he said.

"The cause of his death is also unknown at this stage. The thing I can tell you at this stage is that there are no suspicious circumstances."

Investigators will also try to determine the cause of a fire that caused significant damage to a Frankford house, also in the state's north.
