Suspected mine sighted off Port Lincoln

A suspected sea mine has been spotted in the water near Port Lincoln in South Australia.

Police say they are co-ordinating a response to deal with the object, which is 400 to 500 metres off Boston Island.

A Department of Defence spokesperson said the object was partially submerged in water that was about 20 metres deep.

An exclusion zone has been established around the site pending the arrival of a navy clearance diving team.

The team will identify the object, confirm its location and conduct disposal action as necessary, the spokesperson said.

Police have advised the public to stay clear of the east side of Boston Island and to a distance of 500 metres offshore.
