Thunderstorms are forecast for Perth and the south-west of WA, with bad weather expected to hit this afternoon.

Storms are expected in an area taking in Geraldton to Albany and including the metropolitan area from 5pm, says the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

As at 12.14pm on 17 August 2014 the Bureau of Meteorology advises a strong cold front is approaching the south-west of WA during this afternoon and evening.

"If you live southwest of a line from Geraldton to Morawa to Cunderdin to Albany you need to get ready now for the bad weather coming this afternoon, DFES says.

This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Jurien Bay, Geraldton, Dalwallinu, Narrogin, Katanning, Albany, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Busselton, Bunbury, Mandurah, and the Perth metropolitan area and surrounding areas.

People are advised that there is a risk of severe thunderstorms affecting western parts of the Southwest District from 5pm this afternoon, extending to west of a line from Jurien Bay to Gingin to Windy Harbour by 10pm and the remainder of the warning area by early Monday morning.

Storms may be accompanied by damaging winds and heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding.

There is a slight risk of storms producing large hail affecting the southern Central West district and the adjacent Lower West and Central Wheat Belt with the passage of the front late Sunday evening.

"If storms develop they are likely to be more intense than usual for this time of year and dangerous conditions may occur in some parts of the warning area," DFES said.

Storms could cause damage to homes and property.
