Two people critical after NSW plane crash

A man and woman are fighting for their lives after a light plane crash in northern NSW.

Emergency crews responded to calls of a Cessna aircraft coming down near Inverell Airport shortly after 1pm on Friday, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said.

The plane burst into flames, which have been put out, as has a grass fire.

The three occupants escaped the wreckage, but a man and a woman, aged in their 50s, suffered serious burns, while an 18-year-old woman had minor injuries, police said.

They were taken to Inverell Hospital. The man and woman are in a critical condition.

Police have established a crime scene at the crash site and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate.
