Vicki leads a major mission

Vicky Stuart and her daughter Kaelee Peace are aiming to help end women’s cancer.

A Broome grandmother recently participated in a lifesaving adventure and raised more than $11,000 to help end women's cancer.

Vicky Stuart took part in The Weekend to End Women's Cancers in Perth on March 15 and 16 with her daughter and niece to raise vital funds for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

The event was organised to remember the lives lost to breast or gynaecologic cancer and to celebrate survivors.

Participants walk 60km over two days.

The long-term Broome resident said she was inspired to participate in the walk after she was approached by her daughter Kaelee Peace.

"We've lost some dear friends to breast cancer and we've actually lost some family members to women's cancer and I lost my sister not long ago to leukaemia," she said. "So I thought it was about time to get off my backside and do something about it."

Ms Stuart started fundraising eight months prior to the event by handing out flyers, door-knocking for donations and organising an auction supported by local businesses.

The mother of two initially set a goal of $3000, but ended up raising more than $11,000.

She also clocked up countless kilometres walking between Gantheaume Point and Cable Beach to prepare for the event.

A few weeks ago, Ms Stuart walked the length and breadth of Perth's suburbs with her daughter and niece and hundreds of other women for the cause.

Ms Stuart was also among the top 10 fundraisers of the event.
