Teen charged over ciggie bush blaze

A 19-year-old has been charged after allegedly starting a fire with a cigarette butt in Kalamunda yesterday.

The man, who is from Lesmurdie, allegedly threw away the cigarette into bush in the vicinity of homes near Mundaring Weir and Railway Road about 2.10pm.

Police said the teenager returned with friends to watch the fire while crews, including those in the Department of Fire and Emergency Services helicopter, battled the blaze.

The fire destroyed about 80sqm of bushland.

The 19-year-old has been charged with disposing of burning tobacco during restricted times and will appear in Midland Magistrate's Court today.
