PERTH PUNCHES ABOVE ITS WEIGHT

Frank, who was the keynote speaker at The West Australian's Fashion Agenda lunch, flew in for the special event held as part of the Perth Fashion Festival.

Talking about the "Business Behind the Glamour", Frank gave the sell-out crowd a rare insight into the inner workings of producing a fashion magazine.

Frank, who worked at UK Elle, US Elle and Mademoiselle magazines before launching marie claire in Australia in 1995, said the Perth fashion scene punched above its weight.

"Perth stands up really well compared to the rest of the country, predominantly for your models," she said.

"Some incredible girls have come out of Perth who have made it internationally.

"There are also some amazing designers like Aurelio Costarella - I love his things."

Frank said the Australian fashion industry was going though challenging times but emphasised the importance of festivals in nurturing new talent.

"There is always room for young designers," she said.

"That's what keeps the industry going not only in Perth but internationally.

"Fashion festivals play a big role . . . they're about new, young and up-and-coming designers much more than established ones."

On the future of fashion magazines, Frank was pragmatic.

"I think digital is important and plays a role but you go to magazines for the authority, for the curation - as trusted adviser," she said.
