Perth punches above its weight

One of the most influential people in Australian fashion has described Perth as a hub of creativity and beautiful models.

Marie Claire editor Jackie Frank today flew in from Sydney for a special lunch event for Perth Fashion Festival.

The keynote speaker at The West Australian's Fashion Agenda 'The Business Behind the Glamour' sell-out event at State Reception Centre in Kings Park offered the crowd a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a fashion magazine.

Ms Frank said the Perth fashion scene punched above its weight compared to the more established eastern states markets.

"Perth stands up really well compared to the rest of the country, predominantly for your models," she said.

"Some incredible girls have come out of Perth who have made it internationally.

"There are also some amazing designers like Aurelio Costarella - I love his things.

"Perth is a hub of Australian fashion with real creativity and an outstanding record for beautiful models."

Ms Frank acknowledged fashion all over the country was going though a challenging time but stressed the importance of fashion festivals in nurturing local talent.

"There is always room for young designers. That's what keeps the industry going not only in Perth but internationally," she said.

"That is what a fashion festival does - shows new, young and up-and-coming designers much more than established ones."
