Indignation as Aussies march out to Lorde
Australia likes to lay claim to iconic parts of Kiwi culture – first it was the Pavlova and then Phar Lap. Now it appears the Aussies are trying to lay claim to Lorde once again.
A hit single by Lorde played while the Australian team was led out at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
"And we'll never be royals (royals), It don't run in our blood," blasted before the DJ switched to to Men at Work's Down Under.
The song is as Kiwi as it comes, written by Lorde in half an hour and then refined by Kiwi producer Joel Little.
Twitter users vented their frustration about the song playing as the Australian athletes took centre stage.
Playing Lorde for Australia?! That's going to ruffle a few feathers.

It was most likely a mistake by the Scottish DJ, but it’s not the first time there has been uproar over Lorde’s nationality.
Last year the official Grammy Awards website made a blunder claiming she was an Aussie.
"Australian singer/songwriter Lorde will perform," a release about the nomination show on the Grammy website said last year.
