Cabinet carnage: Meet your new '21st Century' ministers

Tony Abbott's 'old boys' have been axed as new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull appoints more women and more young MPs in his '21st Century' ministry.

As widely predicted, current Minister for Social Services Scott Morrison has replaced Joe Hockey as the Treasurer, pushing him to resign from his parliamentary duties.

"After having served for nearly twenty years as the Member for North Sydney and seventeen years on the frontbench, I advised the Prime Minister that I did not wish to continue as a minister in the Government and that it is my intention to resign from the House of Representatives," Mr Hockey said in a statement.

Senator Marise Payne has been appointed Minister for Defence, replacing Kevin Andrews, becoming the first woman to be in the position.

Prime Minister Turnbull praised Ms Payne as 'one of our most experienced senators', well respected for her work on parliament's defence and foreign affairs committee, especially the Howard government's first tranche of anti-terrorism laws in 2003-04.
