Tourists pull young driver from wrecked ute on Arnhem Highway

Tourists pulled a young driver from his wrecked four-wheel-drive utility after it rolled on the Arnhem Highway, about 175 kilometres east of Darwin this afternoon.

Duty Superintendent Del Jones said the 19-year-old man was found trapped inside the wrecked vehicle, the roof of which had been flattened.

"The four-wheel drive rolled several times and left the road," Superintendent Jones said.

Staff from the medical clinic in Jabiru 80 kilometres away attended the scene and found the driver had already been helped from the vehicle by tourists who came upon the accident earlier.

The man escaped with a broken arm, a doctor from the CareFlight TIO rescue helicopter said.

He was flown to Jabiru for further treatment before being transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital this evening.

"Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor," Superintendent Jones said.

Investigations into the crash were continuing.
