Woman critical, man serious after stabbing and bashing in Gympie

An alert has been issued for a man police have said could be armed and violent after a woman was stabbed up to a dozen times in an attack in Queensland's Wide Bay region.

The woman was stabbed in the chest and abdomen while a second man suffered serious head injuries during the incident, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said.

Both victims were taken to Nambour General Hospital on the Sunshine Coast after the attack at a house on Struan Crescent in Gympie on Sunday morning.

The woman remains in a critical condition while the man was described as being serious but stable.

Queensland Police Service has appealed for help to find a 43-year-old Gympie man who was seen at the house about 6am (AEST) Sunday.

Police have warned people not to approach the man who they said could be violent and armed with a weapon.

He was described as 183cm tall, of proportionate build and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Police have not released his name.

They said he may be travelling in a blue 2002-model Mitsubishi four-wheel drive with the registration plates 729 GJL.

Police have urged anyone who sees him to call Crime Stoppers.
