Adelaide courts closure plan out of SA Government's hands: John Rau

South Australian Attorney-General John Rau says it is not his decision whether Holden Hill and Port Adelaide courts will be closed.

It has been reported that the two suburban courts might be shut to help inject millions of dollars into the justice system's strained budget.

Any closure would allow properties to be sold and could reduce wage bills and other expenditure.

In a statement, Mr Rau said he had constant discussions with the Courts Administration Authority about resources but it had the final decision on how its budget was spent.

Opposition frontbencher Vickie Chapman said it would be disastrous if some of the suburban courts closed.

"For those who currently access these courts they'll have to travel further, it will cost more, there will be a greater delay because we'll be 'racking, packing and stacking' them into the city and Christies [Beach] courts," she said.

"I have no doubt at this point they will close unless the Government is prepared to understand the plight of the courts at the moment, and that is for victims and witnesses and those who are working in the courts as well."
