Vic bushfire victims may get home quicker

Victorians forced from their homes during bushfires may be able to return sooner under reforms being examined by the state government.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells said a review of last summer's bushfire season found a number of systemic issues.

He said one key issue was traffic management, especially the safe, early return of residents, and appropriate access to ensure proper livestock management.

Mr Wells said where there were long-term road closures, there needed to be appropriate access levels consistent with community needs.

He has instructed the state's Inspector-General for Emergency Management, Tony Pearce, to study how to implement the changes.

Mr Wells said it was important to have any problems dealt with by the start of the next fire season.
