Hero dad delivers baby on Sydney highway

A baby who couldn't wait for her delivery by C-section this morning has arrived into the world at peak time on the M4 motorway.

When Alison Lock woke with cramps, she and partner Craig hurried from their Glenfield home to the hospital at 6am.

By 7am, the proud new father sent photos to their family from the side of the M4 after their baby girl Harleigh had unexpectedly raced into the world in under an hour.

New father Craig received delivery instructions in the emergency lane via phone from the ambos.

He certainly wasn't expecting to play such a huge role in his daughter's arrival.

“I didn't think she'd arrive outside Eastern creek raceway,” Craig said.

“She's going to be trouble."

The Hughes family had always planned to welcome the new member of the family at Westmead Children's Hospital on September 24th, but little Harleigh decided to show up 10 kilometres before the front door.

Alison, 20, was scheduled for a C-section as little Harleigh was in breech position.

Her pregnancy complications and Harleigh's medical condition meant doctors said her chance of a natural birth was low.

Little Harleigh still needs some surgery for Spina Bifida, and will be in hospital for another three weeks.
