Kids learn the magic of manners

A lot of parents might feel like the golden age of good manners is over, but a Sydney martial arts expert has devised a program to try and bring it back.

Rosebud Cottage is much like any other childcare centre, except that youngsters are taught that being polite is a special kind of magic that helps everyone get along.

The program was devised by a martial arts sensei. Children are taught that ‘please and thank you are two words that have almost magical properties’.

"A lot of families are not instilling manners at home and it's not because they're terrible,” Author Rose Smith said.

The kids at Rosebud Cottage are in their third week of an eight-week program to teach them good manners, and they are even finding it’s helping the adults to play nicer.

"I've had one parent who was actually corrected by her three year old and said 'Mummy, it's not 'can I,' it's 'may I have that please',” Rosebud’s Elizabath Sousa said.

Rosebud is the first childcare centre to trial the program.
